Yes.
Really, this needs no introduction, so, without further ado…
- I really, really dislike the episodes that center around Will Schuester. Yes, I know the whole idea of the show is the teachers watching the kids they know grow up blah blah blah but I want to see the kids, not the teachers. I’m all for side plots with Will/Emma, Coach Beiste (who I adore) or Sue. I’m not ok with teachers taking over the episode. It pushes the overall story arc out of the picture for an episode and also, Will is a pretty horrific role model a lot of the time. So he’s meant to be flawed and human. Whatever. He just comes across as super self-serving; it’s always all about him until he’s magically redeemed at the end of the episode. It makes me angry that we’re supposed to like him when he’s so two-faced. Also, Sue saying that stuff about him always being cool when she insulted him was crap. I can think of at least three incidents off the top of my head when he was really rude to her.
- All hail Santana Lopez, HBIC. I absolute loved her, for a number of reasons. First and foremost: we got character development that wasn’t related to her sexuality. Yes, her relationship with Brittany is ground-breaking and influential; yes it’s important. But I think we need to remember something here: your sexuality is not the sum total of who you are. It may well be a pretty damn big part of you, but you are a person first and LGBT or whatever second. Second: addressing issues of ethnicity in a way that didn’t feel forced. I’m the first to admit I know very little about the Latin community or culture, particularly as I don’t live in the US. I think she was fully in the right to be unhappy though, as well as to complain about it. Mr Schue has taken the stereotypes (from what we’ve seen) about Latin culture and that’s wrong. What’s more, it was nice to see that Santana herself wasn’t perpetuating the stereotypes - sometimes her ‘all Lima Heights’ and ‘No me gusta’ comments (as well as *cringe* Sebastian’s comment about her relatives being in prison) seem a little textbook. It was great to have a change.
- Emma. Emma has always been a great character. Yes, her OCD is a little irritating sometimes, but surely it would be to anyone who didn’t suffer from it? Anyway, OCD aside, it was cool to have her not only taking a stand against Will but being rewarded for her hard work. She gave some great advice to Sam and Mercedes, as well as earning a tenure for her hard work and standing up to Sue in a way that was relevant/believable. I actually enjoyed her plot. Go Emma!
- Coach Beiste. I love this woman, truly. I liked having her supporting Emma in a way that felt very natural to the character and made sense. Also, I feel like she and Will have always had a bond, so it seemed sort of right that she should be the one making him see the error of his ways.
- Sue. I found this story line gross, highly inappropriate and painful. I find Sue quite painful. Sorry.
- Rachel being shut down by Mercedes and Kurt. Thank you, Glee writers! She’s, what, 18? This wedding thing is crazy and the more people tell her that, the more happy I am. I like that she sees Finn in her future (because it’s cute, not because I like Finn) but this whole wedding thing is just weird.
- Kurt telling Finn what’s what. We all know that Rachel was really accepting Finn because she felt all her other options had been shut down. It was interesting to see that maybe it was the same from the other side. I’m not a Finn fan, but I did like that his character was given a little more depth. And Kurt being mad because they’re brothers now was cute - I tend to forget this half the time, so the reminder was nice. Also, I liked that Kurt had taken the time to find colleges with programs suitable for Finn/transport links to NYADA. (Side note: continuity points on Sam saying he was crashing with Finn and Kurt. And on Blaine being out of the picture. But where is Rory staying?)
- Ricky Martin. I liked him and his character. He was sweet and funny and even sniffle including at times. Also, seeing someone (like Emma and Coach Beiste) being enthusiastic about teaching was a big plus - especially him reinforcing the responsibilities/opportunities Will has to positively influence the kids in Glee Club. The LMFAO number wasn’t my favourite, but I really liked him singing with Santana. Can he come back at some point?
- Samcedes. The sort of couples therapy session with Emma was cute - plus it was really good advice. I liked Mercedes’ song even if I didn’t recognise it and lost half the meaning because I don’t speak Spanish. Sam’s song was less good because the shoes/string ties really distracted me. The Enrique Iglesias bit was sweet though :) However, Shane turning up just as S&M *hahahaha, S&M* were about to powwow felt tired cliched and obvious though. Lame plot device writers. Anyway, Mercedes needs to ditch him and get with Sam. End of.
- Principal Figgins. That man is hilarious. This is all.
- Where was everybody? I mean, we didn’t hear a word from Tina, Mike, Sugar or Quinn (apologies if I’ve made any mistakes). Sugar, fair enough. Mike and Tina I sort of get. But Quinn? After last week’s big focus on Quinn and her future, suddenly ignoring her (especially with the continuing Finchel drama) this week seemed a little grating. And it would have been nice to have Brittany say more than a line - perhaps she could have offered a little support for Santana, seeing as, y’know, they’re girlfriends? I’m not big on Brittana (mainly because I’m not keen on Brittany - don’t shoot please) but I really dislike how it’s selectively portrayed on Glee whenever the writers decide to make a big deal out of how LGBT friendly they are.
So this episode wasn’t my favourite. I was probably about 50/50 split between like and dislike, it just feels like 70/30 because of the dominant Will storyline. Only two of the numbers really got me - La Isla Bonita and Don’t Wanna Lose You.
I think, overall, the episode suffered as a result of some bad story lines (I’m looking at Sue and her creepy search for a sperm donor amongst students - isn’t that illegal or something? And you Will - you know what you did.) and poor writing decisions. However, it had definitely had its good moments.
I guess I’ll be tuning in next week, even if only to see how the Finchel trainwreck screeches into oblivion…
Anonymous Goes On Megaupload Revenge Spree
Anonymous has sure been quiet lately, but today’s federal bust of Megaupload riled ‘em up good: a retaliatory strike against DoJ.gov has left it completely dead.
DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com is reporting the department’s site as universally nuked, and an Anonymous-affiliated Twitter account is boasting success. This is almost certainly the result of a quickly assembled DDoS attack, and easily the widest in scope we’ve seen in some time. If you had any doubts Anonymous is still a hacker wrecking ball, doubt no more.
The combination of the hacking nebula’s SOPA animosity — they’ve been a vocal opponent of the bill since its inception — combined with today’s sudden Megaupload news has made the group bubble over: hundreds upon hundreds of Anon operatives are in a plotting frenzy, chatting about which site will go down next. In Anon’s eyes, the government and media interests are responsible for the undue destruction of Megaupload (and the arrest of four of its operators), so it’ll be exactly those entities that are feeling the pain right now. Pretty much every company that makes movies, TV or music, along with the entirety of the federal government, is in Anonymous’ crosshairs.
Update: Anonymous says they’ve also knocked off the RIAA’s site — looks down for us at the moment as well.
Update 2: Universal Music Group has also fallen off an e-cliff.
Update 3: Goodbye for now, MPAA.org.
Update 4: Affected sites are bouncing in and out of life, and are at the very least super slow to load. Anon agents are currently trying to coordinate their DDoS attacks in the same direction via IRC.
Update 5: The US Copyright Office joins the list.
Update 6: This Anon sums up the mood in their “official” chat room at the moment:
Danzu: STOP EVERYTHING, who are we DoSing right now?
Update 7: Russian news service RT claims this is the largest coordinated attack in Anonymous’ history — over 5600 DDoS zealots blasting at once.
